The rivalry continues with traditional and historic games at Wahconah Park

The intense rivalry between the Williams and Amherst college baseball teams predates the legendary one between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees and could well be its prototype. On May 3 the teams revisit their longstanding diamond rivalry for the one hundred and fiftieth time at historic Wahconah Park in Pittsfield, Massachusetts—practically around the corner from the site of their first meeting, at a lot at the corner of North and Maplewood streets.

Today’s Ephs and Lord Jeffs will face off going into a twenty-first-century tie, each team having won twelve times since the year 2000. In total, the schools have competed against one another 292 times, with Amherst holding the series edge, 164 to 125, with two ties.

This year’s battle for supremacy will also include a pregame meeting of alumni from both schools who will don vintage uniforms and play by the same rules followed in the original game back in 1859. Go Ephs! (MAY 2009)
