Warming Trend
Edging one step closer to top-shelf domination, Great Barrington, Mass.-based Berkshire Mountain Distillers (BMD) recently added two new offerings to its family of award-winning small-batch
spirits: Berkshire Bourbon Whiskey and New England Corn Whiskey.
“It was a no-brainer with the great corn around here,” says founder Chris Weld, who sources stalks from farmer George Beebe just two miles down the road from the distillery. (A jaunt to Kentucky to hone the technique also helped.)
Anticipated by BMD devotees since 2007, the bourbon is traditional in style with earthy notes of vanilla and toffee, a snappy rye bite, and a polished finish; the corn whiskey boasts a sweeter flavor, fruity nose, and ruby-tinged hue thanks to aging on charred cherry wood that, like the oak used for the bourbon, is cut, milled, and charred by hand on the farm.
Pouring next: a new batch of the company’s cult-favorite Ethereal Gin—each limited edition is infused with a unique ratio of about fifteen botanicals, this one boasting spicy brown notes, slated for release in late December. [NOV/DEC 2010]
