EPILOGUE: Stephen Gerard Dietemann Design
“I want to create a new Berkshire vernacular—instead of ersatz nineteenth century, why not genuine twenty-first century? You can be a little bit more … mischievous,” says architect Stephen Gerard Dietemann, whose “first statement” construction, a 1,600-square-foot contemporary, energy-efficient home within spitting distance of the Housatonic Railway on Route 41 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts [profiled in “On the Right Side of the Tracks” by Bess Hochstein, June 2005], earned him a residential design Honor Award by the Western Massachusetts American Institute of Architects in January.

Dietemann moved from the house in August 2006, upon completion of a subsequent energy-efficient project in Great Barrington (from which he’ll move when his current work-in-progress, another small solar home, on Route 183 across from the Mill Pond dam, is completed).
As of press time, it’s on the market again, represented by Wheeler & Taylor Realty Company. If you like smartly conceived style with a definitive rumble of originality, take a look.(MAY 2009)
