Otis, Mass. celebrates its bicentennial

Marching bands, fire engines, and festive floats are all part of the biggest parade ever held in the two-hundred-year-old town of Otis, Mass., during a weekend-long bicentennial celebration. Incorporated on June 13, 1810, the scenic borough is known for its abundance of waterways and open spaces; the historic town center at the intersection of Routes 8 and 23 is notable for its two classic New England churches. The parade on Saturday, June 12, at 1 will be followed by family games such as sack races, tug-of-war, a treasure hunt, and a pie-eating contest, to the tune of guitarist Bruce Mandel, who will introduce a special Otis Bicentennial song penned for the occasion. The Taste of Otis features food from local restaurants, farms, and shops with seating beneath a big top tent, capped with performances by DJ Richie O and the Dooley Austin Band.

Sunday’s events include a guided hike on Knox Trail, bicycle and escorted minibus tours, a craft fair, and petting zoo at Town Hall from 10 to 3, as well as an exposition of antique and classic cars at Crandall’s Field on Route 23 in East Otis. [JUNE 2010]
