A Hint of the New Helsinki in Hudson

(HUDSON, N.Y.) - Club Helsinki Hudson kicked off its Sound Check series of events on Saturday, May 1, 2010, with a concert by Spottiswoode and His Enemies that attracted a sold-out crowd to the not-even-officially-open nightclub. There wasn't even alcohol for sale!

Nevertheless, Spottiswoode put on a great show; the sound was amazing; the crowd was bowled over by the new venue, the successor nightclub (and soon-to-be restaurant) to Club Helsinki and Helsinki Cafe of Great Barrington, Mass.

The whole evening bodes well for the future of Helsinki Hudson. And if you're wondering who these two beatific-looking people are, that's Deborah McDowell and Marc Schafler, the two happiest people in the house on Saturday night -- and with good reason to be. Schafler -- a former contractor -- has been constructing the new nightclub and restaurant for over four years with, literally, his bare hands. And McDowell is the visionary, musician, entrepreneur and artist behind the Helsinki “brand.”

Relive the opening evening in our photo gallery.
