Pie in the Sky

Had a great time at the Hancock Shaker Village Country Fair, and it all happens again tomorrow (Sunday)!

I got to judge the pie contest, with some other journalist types—Susan Orlean, author of The Orchid Thief, Marilyn Bethany of Rural Intelligence, and Tim Farkas from the Eagle. Trust me, there are some fabulous bakers in the Berkshires! We tried fourteen pies, all delicious. It was tough deciding a winner. The pie contest was today only, but the other festivities continue tomorrow.

There are all kinds of farm animals, including some just-born calves, in the Round Stone Barn, and many of the very sweet sheep, goats, and calves can be petted.

There are lots of vendors, too, with everything from heirloom vegetables, seeds, and fresh produce to jams to traditional hand crafts--weaving to baskets. There are hayrides, antique tractors, a big quilt show, a kids’ tent, and a food tent featuring treats from Route 7 Grill, Samels, SoCo Creamery, Dancing Vegan, and Pittsfield Brew Works.

It continues tomorrow (Sunday) from 10 to 5, and it all takes place at Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield, so visits to the Round Stone Barn and the Brick Dwelling are part of the fun. For more information, call 800.817.1137 or go to www.hancockshakervillage.org.
