IN THE GALLERIES: Full Circle

The multicolored orbs spiraling and bursting across James Fissel’s geometric paintings seem to emit energy all their own. Though each work features circles in various forms, the paintings differ greatly: one might incorporate a cloudy sky-like wash in the background or an antiqued image of a stoic angel.
Fissel, whose paintings are on exhibit at MCLA Gallery 51 in North Adams, Massachusetts, through June, is a self-taught artist with a lifelong interest in the beliefs of and history behind the circuitous power of the orb. Ever since being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease fourteen years ago, Fissel has only become more prolific, incorporating his favorite shape into each of his works. In some, it is a boastful center point; in others, an intricately woven pattern; but each entices the eye to dance across the page. (JUNE 2009)
