A-Maize-ing
Spanning twenty-two acres and made of more than 880,000 cornstalks, the Corn Maze at Kettle Farms in Hoosick Falls, N.Y., beckons adventurers young and old to weave through its whimsical design, the largest on the East Coast.
Featuring an amusement park theme this year, the maze, professionally designed and cut by a company called Mazeplay, is made up of four sections of varying difficulties and is surrounded by a wealth of harvest-heralding activities, including moonlight walks, a corn teepee, pumpkin slingshots and corn cannons, campfires, and live music.
Special events, such as a fall festival that includes cornstalk art and husking contests (Oct 9-11), a scarecrow contest (Oct 1-22, judged on Oct 23 at 3), and a Halloween bash featuring a masquerade parade and costume contest (Oct 30), all add to the 82-acre farm’s fall festivities. This is the third year that owners Tammy Morgan and Charlie Bowers have created the massive labyrinth at their farm, which fits perfectly within a roster of other large-and-in-charge specialties, like the one-and-a-half-pound hamburger [“Burger Kings,” by Alison McGee, March/April 2010] and ten thousand varieties of homemade candies and chocolates. Once out of the jumble, visitors can relax at the on-site restaurant of seventeen years, Tammy’s Candy Kettle, which also also boasts sandwiches, ice cream, and local cider. [OCTOBER 2010]
